Gold-filled, vermeil or gold-plated — what is the actual difference?
Two of these three terms are legally defined in the United States and carry a minimum you can hold a supplier to. The third means whatever the seller wants it to mean — and it is the one used most often.
The definitions
Gold-filled is a mechanically bonded layer of karat gold, at a minimum of 5% of total weight — written as 1/20 12k or similar. The gold is bonded to a brass core under heat and pressure, not deposited from a bath, and the layer is orders of magnitude thicker than any plating.
Vermeil requires a sterling silver base and at least 2.5 µm of gold, under US FTC 16 CFR §23.5. Both conditions are mandatory — gold at 2.5 µm over brass is not vermeil, it is heavy gold plating.
Gold-plated has no thickness definition. The term covers 0.05 µm flash plating and 5 µm heavy plating equally, and both are sold using the same words.

FTC definitions apply to products sold in the United States. Using "vermeil" for gold over brass, or "gold-filled" for plating, is a mislabelling exposure rather than a marketing choice.
The problem with "gold-plated"
Because the term carries no thickness definition, two products described identically can differ by a factor of a hundred in deposited gold. A 0.05 µm flash plating and a 5 µm heavy plating are both, accurately, "gold-plated".
They are indistinguishable in a photograph and on the day they arrive. One survives a few weeks of daily wear and the other survives years. This single ambiguity is the largest source of price differences between jewelry quotations that otherwise look identical.
The fix is trivial and almost nobody does it: specify microns in the purchase order.
Which to specify
| If the range is… | Specify | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sold on gold content, US market | Gold-filled | Highest gold content and the strongest claim available short of solid |
| Fine jewelry over silver | Vermeil, ≥ 2.5 µm | Legally defined, real karat gold, sterling base |
| Fashion, mid price point | Gold plating 0.5–1.0 µm | Months to a couple of years of wear at moderate cost |
| Fashion, low price point | Gold plating 0.1–0.5 µm | Accept the wear life; be honest about it in the listing |
| Everyday wear on steel | Gold PVD | Outlasts any plating; not gold in the FTC sense but far more durable |
Mislabelling is a real exposure
Using "vermeil" for gold over brass, or "gold-filled" for a plated piece, is not a marketing shortcut — the FTC definitions exist precisely because these words carry a value claim. Marketplace listings using them incorrectly are removed, and the exposure sits with the seller rather than the factory.
Where a nickel barrier is used beneath the gold, note that the piece may also carry a nickel-release obligation in the EU regardless of what the gold layer is called. See EN 1811 compliance.
Questions on this
Each answer stands alone and can be read without the rest of the article.
What is the difference between vermeil and gold-plated?
Vermeil is defined under US FTC 16 CFR §23.5 as at least 2.5 µm of gold over a sterling silver base — both conditions are mandatory. Gold-plated has no thickness definition and no base metal requirement, so it covers everything from 0.05 µm flash over zinc alloy to 5 µm over brass. Vermeil is a specification; gold-plated is a description.
Is gold-filled better than vermeil?
Gold-filled carries far more gold — 5% of total weight against vermeil's 2.5 µm layer — and lasts decades rather than years. Vermeil has a sterling silver base rather than brass, which gives the piece intrinsic metal value and makes it nickel-free at the core. They are the two strongest gold claims short of solid gold, and which suits depends on whether base metal value or gold thickness matters more to the range.
How thick should gold plating be for everyday jewelry?
0.5–1.0 µm is the practical minimum for a piece that will be worn regularly, giving months to a couple of years before wear-through at contact points. Below 0.175 µm is flash plating and wears through in weeks. Above 2.5 µm is heavy plating lasting several years. Whatever the choice, put the micron figure in the purchase order rather than a colour name.
Can gold-plated jewelry be re-plated?
Yes, and it is routine for higher-value pieces — the piece is stripped, cleaned and re-plated. Whether it is worth doing depends on the piece value against the plating cost. Gold-filled does not need re-plating within any normal service life, which is part of what the higher price buys.
Does gold plating contain nickel?
The gold layer does not, but the barrier layer beneath it usually does — nickel is the industry-default barrier between a base metal and the gold. That barrier sits micrometres from skin and is exposed once the gold wears through. For EU-bound and pierced-ear items, specify a nickel-free barrier such as palladium or a copper strike in writing.
