How does private label jewelry manufacturing work?
Private label puts your brand on an existing design. There is no tooling to pay for, no development stage and no CAD sign-off, so it is by a wide margin the fastest and cheapest route to a range — and the one that gives away design exclusivity in exchange.
- MOQ
- 500 pcs / style / colour
- Sampling
- 10 days
- Production
- 25 days
- Tooling
- Separate one-off line
Who this suits
- New brands testing a market before committing to tooling
- Retailers adding an own-label range alongside branded stock
- E-commerce sellers who compete on brand, photography and service rather than on design
- Established brands filling a gap in a range quickly between development cycles
What each side supplies
Most delays on a first order come from an unstated assumption about who provides what. This is the split.
- Brand assets — logo files in vector format, colour references, packaging artwork
- Selection from existing designs, with material and finish choices
- Quantity per style and per colour
- Target market, so the compliance route can be set
- Existing designs, already tooled and proven in production
- Branding applied — laser-engraved logo, stamped mark, branded clasp tag
- Custom packaging, cards and barcode labelling
- Production, inspection and export documentation

How it runs
Each stage has a duration attached. Tooling time runs before sampling, not inside it, so a launch date is built from the sum rather than from the production figure alone.

Order terms
| MOQ | 500 pcs per style, per plating colour |
|---|---|
| Sampling | 10 days from approved 3D file |
| Bulk production | 25 days after sample approval |
| Tooling | Quoted and invoiced as a separate one-off line — buyer owns it |
| Reorder | No second tooling charge for the same design |
| NDA | Signed before design files or briefs are received |
| Inspection | AQL inspection report travels with the shipment |
| Testing | Arranged on request against the destination market’s standards |
How this differs from the other routes
Private label is the only one of the three routes with no tooling cost and no development time, because the design already exists and is already in production. What it does not give you is exclusivity: the same design is available to other buyers, and competing on it means competing on brand, photography, service and price rather than on the product itself.
| Route | Who designs | Tooling cost | Lead time | Exclusive to you? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Custom / OEM | You | Yes — separate line | Longest — tooling before sampling | Yes |
| ODM | The factory, from your brief | Yes, plus development | Longest — development, then tooling | Only if agreed in writing |
| Private label | Already designed | None | Shortest — ~25 days | No |
What to watch out for
Private label jewelry — buyer questions
Each answer stands alone and can be read without the rest of this page.
What is private label jewelry?
Private label means an existing, already-tooled design is produced and branded as yours — your logo engraved or stamped, your packaging, your labelling. There is no tooling charge and no development stage, so lead time and up-front cost are the lowest of any route. The trade is exclusivity: the underlying design is available to other buyers.
Is private label jewelry exclusive to my brand?
No. The design is existing stock tooling and can be produced for other buyers. Exclusivity requires either an OEM arrangement with a design you own, or a contractually agreed exclusivity period, which normally carries a minimum volume commitment. If a brand's position depends on the product being unavailable elsewhere, private label is the wrong route for it.
How is my logo applied to private label jewelry?
Laser engraving is the usual method — permanent, needs no tooling, and can be varied piece to piece. Stamping is available where the design has a suitable flat face and the quantity justifies a small punch. A branded clasp tag or logo charm is used where the piece itself has no surface for a mark. Send the logo as a vector file; a raster image cannot be engraved cleanly at jewelry scale.
What is the lead time for private label jewelry?
About 25 days for production, plus 3–5 days to proof the branding on a physical sample first. There is no tooling stage and no CAD stage, which is what removes 2–20 days from the front of a custom order and makes this the fastest route to stock.
Can I customise a private label design?
Within limits. Material, plating colour, plating thickness, chain length, sizing and packaging are all open, and those choices alone make a range look distinct. Changing the geometry of the piece means new tooling, at which point the order is OEM rather than private label and carries a tooling cost and a longer lead time.
What minimum order applies to private label?
500 pieces per style, per plating colour — the same as any other route, because the constraint is the plating batch rather than the tooling. Choosing fewer finishes is the most effective way to keep a first private label order small.
